Investing involves risk. Prices can go down as well as up and may become worthless. This is not investment advice.
What is Trading 212?
This assessment reads official fee, protection and campaign documents; it is not an account, trading, support or reward-payout test. Invest and Stocks & Shares ISA are the focus, with SIPP mentioned where its different access/administration matters.
Compare assets, currency costs, funding methods and tax-wrapper suitability against the account you already use. A promotional share does not establish investment suitability or compensate for every fee.
The accounts on offer
- Invest — a general investment account for shares and ETFs; no dealing commission does not remove FX or exchange/tax charges.
- Stocks & Shares ISA — the same investing, inside a UK tax wrapper. No UK tax on gains or dividends within the allowance. UK residents only.
- Cash ISA — for savers rather than investors; earns interest instead of holding shares. Note the free-share referral explicitly excludes Cash ISA accounts.
- CFD — contracts for difference with leverage. A different beast entirely: Trading 212 reports that around three-quarters of retail CFD accounts lose money. If you're here for the free share, this is not the account you want.
- SIPP — a pension with separate tax/access rules, operated by Platform One. Referral rewards go to Invest; do not open a pension solely for a gift.
The fee list, in full
| Fee | Invest / Stocks & Shares ISA |
|---|---|
| Commission on stocks & ETFs | £0 |
| Account, custody & inactivity fees | £0 |
| FX fee (trades in other currencies) | 0.15% |
| Deposits by bank transfer | £0 |
| Deposits by card / Apple Pay / Google Pay | £0 up to £2,000 lifetime, then 0.7% |
| Withdrawals | £0 |
Eligible LSE share purchases can attract 0.5% SDRT; gilts, bonds, ETFs and most AIM stocks are excluded. Other levies/taxes can apply. Check the order screen and official fee list. Bank-side funding charges may apply.
The Stocks & Shares ISA
For UK investors, the ISA is arguably the more interesting account. Everything inside it — gains, dividends, interest — is shielded from UK tax, and Trading 212 doesn't charge for the wrapper itself: no platform fee, no ISA subscription fee, no commission on trades inside it.
The 2026/27 allowance is £20,000 across your ISAs and unused allowance does not carry forward. Current referral clause 3.13 counts Stocks ISA rewards towards it, with an Invest fallback when oversubscribed. Confirm residency/age and any overseas exceptions on GOV.UK.
ISAs are long-term vehicles by design. If you might need the money within a year or two, the stock market is a choppy place to keep it — that's not a Trading 212 problem, that's an investing problem.
Is my money safe?
Trading 212 UK Ltd describes client cash and securities held separately under FCA client-asset rules; those CASS rules are unrelated to the bank Current Account Switch Service. Segregation is not a blanket compensation promise.
FSCS may cover eligible claims if Trading 212 fails and assets/cash are lost, up to £85,000 overall per person/firm. Eligible cash at a failed partner bank has a separate £120,000 limit per banking licence including your other deposits there; check actual cash allocation and product eligibility. Market losses are excluded. SIPP administration by Platform One and its compensation rules are separate.
Worth knowing before you sign up
Choose the assets and wrapper you actually need, compare the cost of your intended trades and funding method, and read cash-holding arrangements. No firsthand app-speed, support-quality, download-ranking or return claim is made.
The campaign gives weighted random reward shares (£8–£100 for GBP accounts); higher values are less common, without a supported usual outcome here. The 30-day lock begins at crediting, and seven-day reversal/recovery clauses matter. Use the campaign guide and general investment-reward guide.

FAQ
- Is Trading 212 really free?
- No dealing commission and no custody charge do not mean no cost. FX is 0.15%; eligible LSE share purchases may attract 0.5% SDRT with exclusions and other levies. Specified card/wallet funding costs 0.7% after the £2,000 cumulative free limit; bank/instant bank transfer remains free from Trading 212, but check your bank.
- Is Trading 212 safe and regulated?
- The firm states FCA authorisation and segregation. FSCS is conditional: up to £85,000 for eligible losses if the firm fails, versus £120,000 per licence for eligible partner-bank deposits if that bank fails. Other deposits under the same licence count; market losses are excluded.
- Can I open a Stocks & Shares ISA with Trading 212?
- GOV.UK normally requires UK residence and age 18+, with specified overseas exceptions. The 2026/27 allowance is £20,000 across ISAs. Current campaign clause 3.13 says Stocks ISA rewards use the allowance; an oversubscribed reward follows the Invest fallback rules.
- What's the catch with commission-free trading?
- Compare FX, funding, exchange/tax charges, asset range and account suitability on your actual activity. Commission-free does not establish a cheaper overall account or a profitable investment.
