Understand investment sign-up rewards without confusing selling a share, withdrawing proceeds or eligible compensation with cash in your bank.

Investing involves risk. Prices can go down as well as up and may become worthless. This is not investment advice.
Assess the account before the gift
Investment providers may offer a share or deposit bonus for eligible new accounts with a specified invitation and funding route. Random rewards do not have a universal value distribution, and a nominally small deposit does not remove product, identity, fee or withdrawal commitments.
Compare the intended investment account, available assets, custody, trading and currency costs first. Do not use leveraged products or money needed for bills just to pursue a welcome benefit. A higher deposit threshold is not evidence of a higher investment return.
Check the complete chain
- Verify UK eligibility, the exact qualifying account and past-customer exclusions.
- Use the accepted invitation or code at the required stage, then complete identity and funding tasks within their actual windows.
- Read allocation timing and whether the reward is a share, cash or credit; do not invent the odds of the largest outcome.
- Check sale eligibility, market settlement, the reward withdrawal-lock start date and any separate restrictions on your deposit.
- Review inactivity, abuse, account-closing and recovery clauses before taking money out; keep evidence of the qualifying route.

Protection is conditional
FSCS says eligible investment claims against firms failing after 1 April 2019 may be covered up to £85,000 per person, per firm. The firm, activity, claimant and failure circumstances must qualify. This is not a blanket promise that an app balance will be repaid, and it does not cover poor investment performance.
Deposit protection is a different category: check where cash is held and whether it is a bank deposit, electronic money or an investment such as a money-market fund. ISA tax treatment and eligibility are separate again. Ask the provider which legal entity and product rules apply to your account.
FAQ
- Can I sell and withdraw immediately?
- Do not assume so. Permission to sell, trade settlement, reward lockups and withdrawal eligibility are different conditions. Read the selected campaign's start date and restrictions on both reward and deposit.
- Does FCA regulation mean the investment cannot lose money?
- No. Authorisation applies to specified entities and activities. FSCS compensation has eligibility conditions and does not cover ordinary investment losses.
