Global YO eSIM Review UK: Are the Cheap Plans Worth the Catches?

Global YO's travel eSIMs reviewed for UK travellers: plans and prices in pounds, the speed cap on unlimited data, which phones work, what YOYO$ points are really worth, the VPN trial that renews, refunds, user complaints and who should skip it.

Best for

UK travellers with an unlocked, eSIM-capable phone who mainly need data abroad, don't mind paying in US dollars and will read the plan screen before they pay.

The data itself is cheap: 5GB for 15 days in Spain lists at US$8.99, about £6.80, and promotions can cut that further. The catches sit around the edges. Prices are in dollars, so a card with a non-sterling fee adds to every plan. Unlimited plans slow down after a daily allowance that Global YO's own pages put at 1GB in one place and 3GB in another. And the app offers a VPN trial that becomes US$4.99 a month. Join through our link and buy your first data plan, and Global YO's invite screen says you get 1,000 YOYO$, about US$10, to spend on later plans, though how much of each plan YOYO$ can cover depends on the cap shown on its plan screen. Buy it for the data, turn down the extras, and treat the points as a bonus.

Pros

  • Low list prices: 10GB for 30 days in the UK, Japan or Hong Kong is US$15.99, and the 50GB and 100GB plans cost under US$1 a GB
  • Hotspot allowed on every plan page we checked, on named local networks
  • Install at home: for another country, validity starts when you arrive, not when you buy
  • Europe Explorer covers 42 countries, including the UK, Switzerland and Turkey, on one plan
  • Top up an active eSIM in the app instead of buying a new one
  • Full refund within 30 days for an eSIM you haven't activated

Watch-outs

  • Priced in US dollars, so your card's exchange rate and any non-sterling fee apply
  • Data only: no phone number, no texts, and plan pages list 4G/LTE rather than 5G
  • Unlimited plans slow down after a daily allowance (1GB in the FAQ, 3GB in the plan data)
  • A VPN free trial renews at US$4.99 a month unless you cancel it
  • A deleted eSIM can't be reinstalled, and data you've used is never refunded
  • Its own pages disagree on how much of a plan YOYO$ can cover

What Global YO is

Global YO is an app that sells travel eSIMs: data plans that install on your phone as a digital SIM, alongside your UK SIM. It is run by YOVERSE INC., a subsidiary of Yonder Media Mobile Inc., based in the Bronx, New York. Its terms say the data may be supplied by a third-party provider, and each plan page names the local networks it uses.

The eSIM shop is one part of a busier app. Global YO also has a calling add-on (YO SHOUT), a VPN, live shows, watch parties and NFTs, and it pays YOYO$ points for time spent in the app. You don't need any of that to buy data, but you will scroll past it.

You must be 18 or over to buy, and signing up asks for your full name, gender, date of birth, address, email and mobile number. The terms are governed by New York law, disputes go to the federal courts in New York, and claims can only be brought individually, not as a class action. The same clause says you keep the mandatory consumer rights of the country you live in.

Will it work on your phone?

You need an unlocked phone that supports eSIM. Check Global YO's compatibility list (dated August 2026) before you pay: buying a plan won't make an incompatible phone work, and a refund for a compatibility problem is a one-off.

If your iPhone came from Hong Kong, Macao or mainland China, check twice. Global YO's list says iPhones from mainland China have no eSIM, and nor do iPhones from Hong Kong and Macao apart from the iPhone 13 mini, 12 mini, SE (2020) and XS. Apple's own pages are newer: in Hong Kong and Macao, the iPhone 16e, the iPhone 17 models, iPhone Air and the iPhone 18 Pro models also take an eSIM, and in mainland China so do the iPhone 17e, iPhone Air and iPhone 18 Pro models. Apple says certain other models sold there use two nano-SIM cards instead.

If your phone supports dual SIM, your UK SIM can stay on for calls and texts to your usual number while Global YO handles data, although your UK network's own roaming charges still apply to anything that line does. Global YO's FAQ says to turn off data switching if you only want data from the Global YO eSIM while you're away, so your phone doesn't quietly fall back to your UK line. The data works on one device at a time: you can log in on several, but the service follows the one in use.

Plans, prices and the unlimited catch

There are three kinds of plan. Single-country plans cover one destination. Explorer plans cover a region: Europe Explorer covers 42 countries, including the UK, Switzerland and Turkey, and Asia Explorer covers 24, including Hong Kong, Macau, mainland China, Japan, South Korea, Taiwan, Thailand and Singapore. Global Explorer 100 and 150 give 10GB for 180 days at US$25.99 and US$39.99.

Prices are in US dollars. On 13 October 2026 the single-country plans for the UK, Japan, Hong Kong and South Korea had identical list prices, from US$4.89 for 1GB over 3 days to US$56.99 for 100GB over 60 days. The small plans are the poor value: 1GB costs US$4.89 a GB, 10GB works out at US$1.60 a GB and 100GB at about 57 cents. Some countries are cheaper: Spain's 5GB for 15 days was US$8.99, against US$11.99 for the UK or Japan.

Prices move with promotions. On 13 October, a Tuesday, the promotions page showed a one-day Happy Tuesday sale with up to 40% off plus 20% back in YOYO$. We quote list prices because discounts come and go; the price at checkout is the one that counts.

Unlimited plans cost US$11.99 for 3 days up to US$52.99 for 30 days in the UK or Japan, and less in some countries (Spain's 7-day plan was US$16.99). They are not unlimited at full speed. Global YO's FAQ says that after 1GB of high-speed data a day some partner networks cut the speed, while the plan data on its own website sets a 3GB daily cap followed by 512 kbps, which is slow for video. The allowance resets each day. Check the figure on the plan screen in the app before you pay.

Every plan page we checked lists 4G/LTE, hotspot allowed, no phone number and no SMS. The networks are named per country: Three, EE and O2 in the UK, Movistar and Vodafone in Spain, AT&T in the US, KDDI in Japan, 3 in Hong Kong and China Unicom in mainland China. The terms add that the network mode and speed depend on the local network's coverage and congestion.

Global YO single-country list prices for the UK, Japan, Hong Kong and South Korea, with cost per GB: 1GB for 3 days US$4.89 (US$4.89 a GB), 3GB for 15 days US$7.99 (US$2.66), 5GB for 15 days US$11.99 (US$2.40), 10GB for 30 days US$15.99 (US$1.60), 20GB for 30 days US$23.99 (US$1.20), 50GB for 45 days US$38.99 (US$0.78), 100GB for 60 days US$56.99 (US$0.57). Unlimited plans in the UK, Japan and Hong Kong cost US$11.99 for 3 days, US$21.99 for 7, US$35.99 for 15 and US$52.99 for 30, at full speed only up to a daily allowance of 1GB according to the FAQ or 3GB then 512 kbps according to the plan data.

What a week in Spain costs in pounds

Take a week in Spain. The Spain 5GB plan, valid for 15 days, lists at US$8.99. At the Bank of England's rate for 12 October 2026 (US$1.3220 to the pound) that is about £6.80. If the trip crosses borders, Europe Explorer's 5GB for 15 days is US$10.99, about £8.31. If you want unlimited data, Spain's 7-day plan is US$16.99, about £12.85, with the daily speed cap described above.

Your card sets the final rate. Global YO's plan pages show Visa, Mastercard, Apple Pay and Google Pay, and the price is in dollars whichever you use. A card with a 3% non-sterling fee would add about 20p to the Spain 5GB plan and 39p to the unlimited one; a card with no foreign transaction fee avoids that.

Join through our link and that first plan also earns you 1,000 YOYO$, about US$10 or £7.56 at the same rate, to put towards a later plan or top-up within the cap on its plan screen (see the referral section below). It's a discount on what you buy next, not on this plan.

A week in Spain at Global YO list prices on 13 October 2026, converted at the Bank of England rate of US$1.3220 to £1 for 12 October 2026: Spain 5GB for 15 days US$8.99, about £6.80; Europe Explorer 5GB for 15 days across 42 countries US$10.99, about £8.31; Spain Unlimited for 7 days with a daily speed cap US$16.99, about £12.85. A card with a 3% non-sterling fee would add about 20p, 25p and 39p.

Installing, activating and topping up

Buy and install the eSIM at home, on Wi-Fi. For a country you aren't in yet, activation only starts when you arrive and connect to the destination network, so the validity clock doesn't start before you leave. A 1-day plan runs for 24 hours from activation, not until midnight.

Don't delete it. Global YO says a deleted eSIM can't be reinstalled, and nor can an existing eSIM be moved to a new phone: you would need to buy another. If an active plan misbehaves, contact support before removing anything.

If the eSIM shows as installed but there's no data, the FAQ's fix is to set the APN to by hand: on an iPhone under Settings, Mobile Service, your eSIM, Mobile Data Network; on Android under Access Point Names. If that doesn't work, email support@globalyo.com with your country, phone model and a screenshot of the APN screen.

Running low? Top up the active eSIM from the My eSIM section of the app, or buy a second plan for the same country. Unused data on a single-country plan can't be moved to another country's eSIM; regional and global plans can be used in any country they include.

YOYO$: earning, spending and cashing out

YOYO$ are Global YO's reward points. Its Google Play listing puts 100 YOYO$ at US$1, though its terms describe any value shown as an estimated promotional value rather than a fixed exchange rate. You earn 1 YOYO$ for every minute spent in the app, plus cash back on plans, shown on each plan: 20% on 13 October, a promotion day. The campaign settings behind Global YO's promotions page showed a standard 5% back on eSIM purchases.

How much of a plan they can pay for is where Global YO contradicts itself. The FAQ says up to 50% of the price, the terms say up to 100%, the Google Play listing promises up to 100% off and the App Store listing says up to 50% off your first plan. The FAQ also says the maximum discount is shown on each plan's details screen, and that is the figure to trust.

They don't expire as long as you complete at least one YOYO$-earning transaction in each calendar year and your account stays active and in good standing.

Eligible users can now move YOYO$ to a Visa card run by Bancus. You need to be 18 or over, with at least two purchases and US$15 of lifetime spend, and at least one purchase in the last six months. The minimum is 1,000 YOYO$ and Bancus charges a 4% processing fee, so 1,000 YOYO$ comes to about US$9.60 at the 100 = US$1 rate, before Visa converts it to pounds. It is only available in places Global YO and Bancus have expressly approved, and neither says whether the UK is one. Treat YOYO$ as a discount on your next plan, not as cash.

How YOYO$ work, with 100 YOYO$ worth US$1 according to the Google Play listing. Earning: 1 YOYO$ per minute in the app, cash back shown on each plan (20% on 13 October, a promotion day), and 1,000 YOYO$, about US$10, once you buy your first data plan after joining through a friend's link (Global YO's in-app invite screen). Spending: the FAQ says up to 50% of a plan's price, the terms say up to 100%, and the cap on each plan's details screen applies. Cashing out to a Bancus Visa card: 18 or over, at least 2 purchases, US$15 lifetime spend and 1 purchase in the last 6 months; minimum 1,000 YOYO$ with a 4% fee, about US$9.60; approved places only, UK not confirmed. Keeping them: no expiry while you earn at least one YOYO$ each calendar year.

The referral offer

Join through our link, which carries GetQuids' code , create a new account and buy your first data plan, and Global YO's in-app invite screen says you get 1,000 YOYO$, shown as $10, to spend on data deals and discounts. At Google Play's rate of 100 YOYO$ to US$1 that is about US$10, or roughly £7.56. Other Global YO pages and store listings have shown different referral figures; the invite screen, checked on 13 October 2026, is what applies to our link, and the live terms in the app control the final amount.

The conditions: open our link on your phone, install the app and create a new account, so the referral attaches to it. You must be 18 or over to buy. The reward comes with your first data plan purchase, so signing up without buying doesn't earn it. It's paid in YOYO$, not cash, so it follows the spending cap and expiry rule above: each plan screen shows how much of that plan YOYO$ can cover, and Global YO can change its earning and redemption rules.

Disclosure: this is GetQuids' own referral link, so we earn YOYO$ when you join through it. Per the invite screen, we get 50 YOYO$ when a friend signs up and 1,000 YOYO$ when they buy their first plan, plus a share of their purchase, which the screen headlines as "Give 5, Get 50%".

Extras to switch off: the VPN trial and YO SHOUT

The app sells a Global YO VPN. The UK App Store listing gives new subscribers a one-month free trial, then US$4.99 a month (prices can vary by App Store region, and the UK store lists the one-month VPN plan at £4.99), renewing automatically unless you cancel at least 24 hours before the current period ends. Google Play describes it as available on its own or bundled with an eSIM plan. Unexpected monthly charges linked to this trial come up repeatedly in Trustpilot reviews.

If you don't want to pay for it, don't start the trial, or cancel it straight away in your App Store or Google Play subscriptions. Global YO's terms add that if you cancel a subscription by contacting it, only its confirmation proves the cancellation worked; without one, charges may continue.

YO SHOUT is the calling add-on, offered on plan pages and at checkout. It makes internet calls from the app: outgoing calls worldwide, but incoming calls only from other Global YO users, and people can't ring back the number it displays. Some users say it didn't work for them. If you only need to call home, a WhatsApp or FaceTime call over your eSIM data does the job.

Refunds, cancelling and leaving

Global YO's FAQ promises a full refund within 30 days for an eSIM you haven't activated, a refund if it can't be installed or used because of a technical problem on Global YO's side, and a one-off refund for a compatibility problem within 30 days if the eSIM wasn't used. There are no partial refunds for data you've used, and none for an eSIM that expired without being activated or one bought through a third party.

To ask, email support@globalyo.com with your order number. If approved, the refund can take up to 30 business days. The terms are stricter in general (purchases are non-refundable once delivered, except where consumer law or app store rules require a refund), so ask quickly and leave the eSIM unactivated if you might want your money back.

Data plans are one-off purchases. What renews is a subscription, such as the VPN, or a recurring package if you pick one. To close your account, contact support; Global YO says it then deletes the information it holds, apart from anything it must keep by law. Spend your YOYO$ first.

What users complain about

On 13 October 2026 the app was rated 4.5 from 571 ratings on the UK App Store and 4.5 from 5,632 on Google Play in the UK, with more than 100,000 Play downloads. Trustpilot is more divided: 4.0 from 1,302 reviews, with 60% five-star and 23% one-star. Global YO replies to its negative reviews there, though some replies answer a different review from the one they sit under.

The recurring complaints are eSIMs that won't install or activate or whose code is reported as no longer valid, slow or unresponsive support, refunds refused once an eSIM has been installed or activated, unlimited plans slowing sharply after the daily cap, 3G or slow speeds in some countries (Japan, Sri Lanka, Turkey and the UAE are named), unexpected recurring charges linked to the VPN trial, YOYO$ not credited for time in the app, price rises, and an app so crowded with extras that the eSIM tools are hard to find.

The praise is for low prices, easy installation, named support staff who sorted problems out, wide coverage including mainland China, and a hotspot that works.

Who should use it, and who should skip it

Consider it if you have an unlocked, eSIM-capable phone, your UK plan charges for roaming where you're going, you mainly need data, and you're happy to pay in dollars, check the daily cap on unlimited plans and turn down the VPN and calling extras.

Skip it if your UK plan already includes roaming at your destination, if you need a local number or texts, if your iPhone came from Hong Kong or mainland China without eSIM, if you want quick support while you're abroad, or if you'd only be buying a plan to collect the YOYO$: the 1,000 YOYO$ is worth about US$10 and only discounts later Global YO purchases.

FAQ

Does a Global YO eSIM give me a phone number?
No. Every plan page we checked is data only, with no phone number and no SMS. If your phone supports dual SIM, your UK SIM can stay on for calls and texts to your usual number.
When does the validity period start?
When the eSIM activates, which for another country happens when you arrive and connect to the local network. You can install it at home in advance. A 1-day plan lasts 24 hours from activation.
Are the unlimited plans really unlimited?
The data is, the speed isn't. Global YO's FAQ says some partner networks cut the speed after 1GB of high-speed data a day, while its plan data sets 3GB a day and then 512 kbps. Check the figure on the plan screen before you pay.
Can I use it as a hotspot?
Yes. Every plan page we checked lists hotspot as allowed. The data works on one device at a time.
Will my iPhone from Hong Kong work?
It depends on the model. Global YO's list only names the 13 mini, 12 mini, SE (2020) and XS from Hong Kong and Macao, but Apple says newer Hong Kong models, including the iPhone 16e, the iPhone 17 models, iPhone Air and the iPhone 18 Pro models, take an eSIM too. Check your exact model on Apple's Hong Kong support page before you buy.
What are YOYO$ worth?
Google Play puts 100 YOYO$ at US$1. They mainly discount data plans, up to the cap shown on each plan screen. Eligible users in approved places can move them to a Bancus Visa card, minimum 1,000 YOYO$ with a 4% fee, but the UK isn't confirmed as one of those places.
What do I get through the referral link?
Global YO's invite screen says that when you join through our link and buy your first data plan, you get 1,000 YOYO$, shown as $10 and about US$10 at Google Play's 100 YOYO$ = US$1 rate. You spend them on later plans, up to the cap on each plan screen. The live terms in the app decide the final amount.
Can I get a refund?
Within 30 days for an eSIM you haven't activated, by emailing support@globalyo.com with your order number. Used data isn't refunded, and an eSIM that expired unactivated isn't either. Refunds can take up to 30 business days.
