Best for

People who want to manage a UK SIM in an app, are happy to use O2 coverage and can choose a plan without needing a traditional phone contract or shop support.

giffgaff is worth comparing if its O2 coverage works where you live and a rolling plan suits your use. Its plans now span 2GB to unlimited data, while 18-month contracts are a separate product with different prices and allowances. EU roaming is useful for trips but capped at 5GB (or the plan allowance if lower), with a 63-day UK-use test. The £5 credit offer is a small extra; choose the network for the plan and signal, not the credit.

Pros

  • Monthly rolling plans are available alongside separate 18-month contract plans
  • 5G is included on compatible devices where O2 coverage is available
  • The app handles plan changes, account credit and eSIM setup
  • EU roaming is included on eligible plans, subject to a 5GB fair-use cap
  • The current GetQuids offer lists a free SIM and £5 account credit after activation
  • No shop visit is needed to order or manage a SIM

Watch-outs

  • Signal depends on O2 coverage at your home, work and regular routes
  • EU roaming data is capped and requires recent UK use
  • The £5 reward is account credit, not cash
  • New members need the app to get an eSIM; an eSIM switch can take up to 24 hours
  • Out-of-plan and roaming use can cost more than the monthly plan
  • Support is primarily online rather than through a high-street shop

What giffgaff is

giffgaff is a UK mobile virtual network operator that uses O2's network. It sells SIM-only service and phones, with app and web account management. Check the O2 coverage checker for your postcode and the places you actually use your phone; a national coverage percentage cannot tell you whether a particular building or commute has reliable signal.

A SIM-only plan does not finance a handset. If you take a separate 18-month contract, check its total cost and exit terms independently: the contract offers shown beside monthly rolling plans can have different allowances and prices.

Monthly plans and contract offers

On 14 October 2026, giffgaff's live SIM-only page showed monthly rolling options from £6 for 2GB to £35 for unlimited data, with 5GB at £8, 20GB at £10, 26GB at £12, 50GB at £15, 100GB at £20 and 200GB at £25. Prices and promotions can change, so compare the live checkout before ordering.

Do not compare only the headline monthly figure. Check whether the offer is rolling or an 18-month contract, the data allowance after any introductory period, and what happens when you use all the data. giffgaff's help pages distinguish plans, credit and contract products; the word 'goodybag' may still appear in older help material.

Monthly rolling options checked 14 October 2026: £6 for 2GB, £8 for 5GB, £10 for 20GB, £12 for 26GB, £15 for 50GB, £20 for 100GB, £25 for 200GB and £35 for unlimited data. Separate 18-month plans are not shown.

Coverage, 5G and your phone

giffgaff uses O2's UK network and offers 5G on compatible devices where coverage is available. The practical test is the postcode checker plus indoor reception at the places you use the phone. If you rely on Wi-Fi calling, check your handset and current giffgaff support information before switching.

You can use a physical SIM or an eSIM on supported phones. New members set up an eSIM in the app; switching an existing SIM to eSIM may take up to 24 hours. Keep access to another phone or Wi-Fi while changing SIMs, because calls and verification texts may be interrupted during the change.

EU roaming and travel

Eligible plans include roaming in the EU and selected destinations, but roaming data is limited to 5GB or the plan's data allowance if that is lower. Data above the cap is charged at 10p per MB. The plan's full UK allowance is not a promise of unrestricted roaming data.

giffgaff's fair-use policy also checks that you have used the SIM in the UK during the preceding 63 days. It describes roaming as intended for periodic trips, not as a permanent substitute for UK use. Check the current destination list and rates before travelling, especially outside the EU.

giffgaff EU roaming limits: up to 5GB or the plan's data allowance if lower; use above the cap is 10p per MB. A 63-day prior UK-use condition applies.

The free SIM and £5 credit offer

The GetQuids link is the route for this offer. The current invitation information describes a free SIM order and £5 of extra giffgaff account credit after SIM activation. The £5 is not cash. The provider's general spread page advertises a £5 reward for a friend who activates a SIM, but the affiliate page's exact qualifying steps are not fully visible before checkout; check the offer and the account after activation rather than assuming an unlisted top-up is required.

Do not order a SIM just for the credit if you would not use giffgaff. Compare the plan you would actually choose, confirm the SIM order came through the GetQuids link, and keep the order confirmation in case the credit does not appear under the live offer terms.

App, account and support

The app lets you manage your plan and account credit, check usage and handle SIM tasks. The UK App Store listing was rated 4.7 from about 103,000 ratings on 14 October 2026. Ratings measure the overall app experience, not reception or support for every customer.

giffgaff's support model is online. That can suit people who are comfortable using help pages and community support, but it is less convenient if you expect to walk into a shop or speak to a phone agent. Keep a record of account messages for billing, SIM or number-porting problems.

Changing or leaving

For a monthly rolling plan, turn off the next recurring plan in your account before its renewal date if you do not want another month. For a number transfer, request a PAC from the provider you are leaving and follow giffgaff's current switching instructions; check both providers' guidance before cancelling so you do not lose a number you want to keep.

An 18-month contract has different commitments from a rolling SIM. Read its contract terms and any handset finance separately, including the cost of leaving early. Do not assume that cancelling one account setting ends every linked payment or device agreement.

Who should consider it

Consider giffgaff if the O2 signal is good where you need it, you prefer app-based account management and one of the live plan options fits your expected data use. It can also suit someone who wants an eSIM and does not need in-person support.

Look elsewhere if O2 coverage is weak at home or work, you regularly need more than the roaming cap abroad, you want phone-based support, or another network gives you a lower total cost for the same term and allowance. The £5 credit should not decide the network choice.
