Barclays Bank Account Review: Is the £300 Switch Worth It?

The Barclays Bank Account and its £300 switch offer reviewed: every condition for the £150 and the five £30 payments, who is shut out, what it's worth against the fees abroad and on overdrafts, Blue Rewards, the app and service, and who should skip it.

Best for

People who have never had a Barclays switch bonus, had no Barclays current account open on 1 October 2026, and can move a salary of at least £2,000 a month to Barclays for about six months along with a full CASS switch.

Worth doing if your salary can come with you. The £150 needs a full CASS switch with three Direct Debits and a salary of at least £2,000 in the first 30 days. The other £150 comes as £30 a month for five months, and each month needs £2,000 of salary and 10 card purchases. That adds up to at least £12,000 of salary through the account over about six months, so this is an offer for your main account, not a spare one. If your pay is under £2,000 a month, or you'd rather not move it, the realistic prize is £150, and NatWest and first direct pay more for less. As an everyday account it is ordinary: no monthly fee, but 2.99% on spending abroad, overdraft interest of 35.0% a year (variable) and no credit interest that we could find. And it's one Barclays switch bonus per person, ever.

Pros

  • Up to £300: £150 for the switch, then £30 a month for up to five months
  • No monthly fee on the Barclays Bank Account
  • Existing Barclaycard, mortgage, savings and business customers can still qualify by registering as new in the app
  • Miss a month and you lose only that month's £30; the others still count
  • Barclays says the reward isn't subject to UK income tax, and withdrawing the offer won't affect you once you have started your switch
  • No interest if you go overdrawn by £15 or less, and no fee when a payment is returned unpaid

Watch-outs

  • The full £300 needs at least £12,000 of salary over about six months, and transfers between your own personal accounts don't count
  • Each £30 also needs 10 eligible card purchases in the same month, and purchases still pending at month end don't count
  • No bonus if you had any Barclays current account open on or before 1 October 2026, or have ever had a Barclays switch bonus
  • Full switch only, with 3 active Direct Debits: your old account closes
  • 2.99% fee on card spending, cash withdrawals and refunds in foreign currencies
  • Trustpilot's 4.1 hides a split: 47% of 26,396 reviews are one-star, often about blocked payments and support

What Barclays is

The account is provided by Barclays Bank UK PLC. Its tariff says it is authorised by the Prudential Regulation Authority and regulated by the Financial Conduct Authority and the PRA (Financial Services Register number 759676). The switch offer's terms are between you and that company.

Eligible deposits are protected by the FSCS up to £120,000. Barclays says the limit covers the total you hold across Barclays, Barclays Business Banking, Barclays Premier Banking, Barclays Wealth Management and Tesco Bank, so savings at Tesco Bank and a Barclays current account share one limit rather than getting one each.

It is a high-street bank, so alongside the app and Online Banking there are branches and telephone banking. Barclays says 12 million customers use its app.

The Barclays Bank Account

The switch offer only covers the Barclays Bank Account, Barclays' standard current account. It has no monthly fee. You get a Visa debit card (you can put your own photo on it), Apple Pay, Google Pay and Samsung Pay, instant spending notifications and budgeting tools in the app. Barclays says some app features may be unavailable until your switch has completed.

The Travel Wallet lets you buy US dollars and euros in the app, spend them on the same debit card and convert what's left back to pounds. Barclays advertises it as having no transaction fees, which is true when you spend from it; its tariff charges 2.75% of the sterling amount when you load it.

An arranged overdraft is optional and subject to an application (costs are under fees below). Barclays also sells Travel and Tech Packs, insurance add-ons for a monthly fee, and Blue Rewards for £5 a month, covered further down.

We couldn't find a credit interest rate for the Barclays Bank Account on Barclays' pages, so don't expect the balance to earn anything. Savings accounts are separate.

The £150 switch reward

You need to be a new sole Barclays current account customer, 18 or over and a UK resident. Start your application in the Barclays app from 1 October 2026 and complete it within 21 days of starting.

Within 30 days of opening the account, request a full switch with the Current Account Switch Service (CASS) from another UK bank or building society. You do this in the app under 'Switch to Barclays'. The switch has to bring at least three active Direct Debits; the terms don't mention standing orders, so don't count on them. In the same 30 days, pay in a salary of at least £2,000.

Salary has a narrow meaning here: a Bacs payment from an employer, a Bacs payment from a state or private pension, or a transfer from a UK business account to your personal account (a sole trader paying themselves, for example). Transfers between your own personal accounts don't count, so moving £2,000 across from your old bank won't do it. The £150 rule asks for 'a salary of at least £2,000', while the monthly rule says salary payments 'totalling' £2,000. If your pay arrives in two parts, Barclays doesn't say whether they can add up for the £150; a single payment of £2,000 or more is the safe reading.

Barclays pays the £150 within 28 working days of you meeting the conditions, and it shows on your statement as 'Switch Reward'. The sole account must still be open on the day it pays, and there is one £150 per person. You can spend the money you pay in: Barclays says using it doesn't affect your eligibility.

One wrinkle: the step summary at the top of Barclays' offer page tells you to 'pay in' at least £2,000 within 30 days of opening 'and make at least 10 debit card transactions', while the formal terms ask for salary and no card purchases for the £150. Following the stricter version costs nothing, so make 10 purchases in the first 30 days as well.

The offer runs from 1 October 2026 until Barclays withdraws it, with no end date. If it does withdraw it, the terms say you won't be adversely affected if you have already started your switch, met the conditions or been told you qualify. Barclays also says the offer isn't subject to UK income tax.

How to get the £150 switch reward: 1, apply in the Barclays app and finish within 21 days of starting; 2, request a full CASS switch with at least 3 active Direct Debits; 3, the switch completes in 7 working days and the old account closes; 4, receive £2,000 of salary by Bacs from an employer or pension; 5, £150 paid within 28 working days as 'Switch Reward'. The switch request and the salary must both fall within 30 days of opening. A transfer from your own UK business account also counts as salary, and Barclays' step summary also mentions 10 debit card transactions. Not eligible if you had any Barclays current account open on or before 1 October 2026 or have ever had a Barclays switch bonus; joint accounts, existing Barclays accounts, Basic Current Account applicants and anyone without a mobile number for the app are also excluded.

The £30 monthly rewards

Once you have qualified for and received the £150, you can earn £30 a month for up to five months. In each qualifying calendar month you need at least 10 eligible debit card purchases on the account and salary payments totalling at least £2,000, both in the same month. The account must be open on the day Barclays pays. Each £30 arrives within 28 working days and also shows as 'Switch Reward'.

Purchases count in shops, online and through digital wallets such as Apple Pay. Cash withdrawals, cash deposits, ATM transactions, gambling, payments that are reversed, refunded or charged back, transfers between Barclays accounts, person-to-person payments and salary don't count. Purchases still pending at the end of the month don't count either, so don't leave the tenth one until the last day.

Barclays' own example: you qualify for the £150 in October 2026 and are told by text message. The five qualifying months are then November 2026 to March 2027, paid December 2026 to April 2027. Elsewhere the terms say the months follow 'receipt' of the £150, which could push the start back a month if the £150 arrives late. The safe plan is to meet both conditions every month from the month after you qualify until five £30 payments have arrived.

Miss a month and you lose that month's £30 only; the others still count. The monthly payments are capped at £150 in total, even if you switch more than one account to Barclays.

Barclays' example timeline for someone who qualifies in October 2026: the £150 arrives in November or December, within 28 working days. Months 1 to 5 are November 2026 to March 2027, each needing at least 10 eligible purchases and £2,000 of salary, and each £30 is paid the following month, December 2026 to April 2027. In total £150 plus 5 × £30 = £300, for at least £12,000 of salary and 50 eligible purchases. Missing a month loses only that £30. Cash, ATM, gambling, refunded, pending and person-to-person payments and transfers between Barclays accounts don't count; digital wallet payments do.

Who can't get it

You can't get the offer if you had any Barclays current account open on or before 1 October 2026, including a student, graduate or Premier account. The exclusion only mentions accounts that were open, so a former customer who closed theirs before then and never had a switch bonus doesn't appear to be ruled out; the terms also ask for a 'new' current account customer, so check with Barclays if that's you. Anyone who has ever received a switch bonus from Barclays is excluded, however long ago.

Also out: joint accounts, people who are only eligible for a Barclays Basic Current Account, switching in an existing Barclays account, anyone without a mobile number to use in the Barclays app, and switches requested before the offer started or after it closes. Barclays won't pay if it closes the account, or if it believes you acted fraudulently or meant to abuse the offer.

The application has to go through the app. Barclays lets people without a UK mobile number apply online instead, but the offer's terms require the app, so treat that route as not qualifying.

If you already have a Barclaycard, a Barclays mortgage, a savings account or a Barclays business account but no personal current account, you may still qualify. Barclays' instructions: delete the Barclays app, reinstall it, choose 'I'm new to Barclays', then 'Apply for an account'. The new account should appear in the app within 48 hours; if it doesn't, contact Barclays to merge your profiles.

You also need a current account at another UK bank or building society to switch from. If you have just arrived in the UK and don't have one yet, there is nothing to switch.

What it's worth

With every condition met, the offer pays £300 over about six months: £150 for the switch and five payments of £30. Getting all of it takes at least £12,000 of salary through the account (£2,000 in the first 30 days, then £2,000 in each of the five months) and at least 50 eligible card purchases. If your pay is already over £2,000 a month and you are happy to make Barclays your main account, that is little extra effort. For anyone else, the realistic prize is £150.

In Barclays' own example, the £150 arrives within 28 working days of qualifying in October and the last £30 in April 2027. To start the clock early, open the account early in the month and request the switch straight away, so CASS has had its seven working days to move your salary before your next payday.

The account costs nothing unless you use it abroad or borrow. Barclays' own example adds £2.70 to a €100 card purchase (£90.22 before the fee), and a £500 arranged overdraft costs £12.45 for 30 days. Blue Rewards, if you add it, is £5 a month, or £30 over the six months the offer runs.

What the £300 is worth, with every condition met: £150 switch reward plus £150 of monthly rewards over about six months, on an account with no monthly fee. What can eat into it: €100 spent abroad costs £2.70 in fees on top of £90.22 at 2.99%; £500 of arranged overdraft at 35.0% a year (variable) costs £2.88 for 7 days, £12.45 for 30 days and £25.21 for 60 days; optional Blue Rewards at £5 a month costs £30 over six months or £60 a year. Blue Rewards also opens the Rainy Day Saver, paying 3.96% AER variable on £1 to £5,000, about £198 a year on £5,000 if the rate stays the same, and needs £800 paid in every month.

Fees and catches

Spending abroad. Card purchases, cash withdrawals and refunds in a foreign currency cost 2.99% of the sterling amount, including when you shop on a non-UK website. Barclays converts at the Visa exchange rate. If a card machine abroad offers to charge you in pounds you avoid the 2.99%, but the merchant sets the exchange rate, so it can cost more overall. The Travel Wallet swaps the 2.99% for 2.75% when you load euros or dollars. For anything else, or to pay less, carry a card with no foreign transaction fee.

Overdraft. An arranged overdraft, if you are approved, costs 35.0% a year (variable), with a representative APR of 35.0% on an assumed £1,200. There are no fees, only interest: Barclays puts £500 at £2.88 for 7 days, £12.45 for 30 days and £25.21 for 60 days. You aren't charged interest if you go overdrawn by £15 or less, or on amounts that take you into an unarranged overdraft or over your limit, though Barclays will usually refuse a payment that would do that, and going over can harm your credit score. Overdrafts are repayable on demand.

Other charges. There is no fee when a payment is returned for lack of funds, but Direct Debits and standing orders need the money in the account by 3pm on the day they go out. A same-day CHAPS payment is free in Online Banking and £25 in a branch or by phone. Sending money abroad has no Barclays fee in the app or Online Banking (£25 in a branch or by phone), though a US dollar cover charge or overseas bank charges can apply; receiving an international payment of more than £100 costs £6, while euro payments from the EEA are free. A temporary card collected from a branch costs £12. These figures come from Barclays' tariff, which is stated as correct as at 1 June 2025.

Barclays' own page. Besides the step summary that doesn't match the terms, one FAQ mentions a '£450 CASS reward', the Premier offer's figure. The terms dated October 2026 are what count: £150 plus up to five payments of £30.

Blue Rewards and the Premier version

Blue Rewards is an optional add-on for £5 a month. It needs at least £800 paid into your account every month (the salary you pay in for the offer covers that), the Barclays app and an email address. You get Apple TV (normally £9.99 a month), cashback at selected retailers through Barclays Cashback Rewards, and access to two savings accounts: the Rainy Day Saver, at 3.96% AER on £1 to £5,000 and 0.70% above that, and the Blue Rewards Saver, at 2.51% AER in months when you don't withdraw (0.60% in months when you do). Rates are variable.

Is it worth £60 a year? £5,000 in the Rainy Day Saver would earn about £198 a year at today's rate, and if you'd pay for Apple TV anyway, that alone costs more than the fee. If you'd use neither, skip it. Barclays can cancel your membership, with at least two months' notice, if you aren't getting value from it or stop being eligible.

Barclays runs a bigger version of the offer for its Premier Current Account: up to £600, made up of £450 for switching and paying in at least £5,000 of salary within 30 days, plus another £150 over five months. Premier needs a gross annual income of at least £75,000 paid in, or at least £100,000 in savings or eligible investments with Barclays. This review covers the standard account; read the Premier terms separately if you qualify.

Applying, switching and cancelling

You need to be 18 or over, a UK resident with a UK mobile number, and to have a passport or a full UK, EU or EEA driving licence. Applying in the app also needs three years of address history, and you confirm your identity with your phone's camera and your ID. Barclays says it takes 10 to 15 minutes. If you are approved you get your account details straight away; the card arrives within seven working days and the PIN appears in the app within 24 hours.

If you have just moved to the UK, Barclays says anyone with a passport can apply in the app, although the app route also asks for three years of address history. To use an eVisa instead you have to book a branch appointment, and it isn't clear whether a branch-assisted application meets the offer's app-only rule, so ask before relying on it.

The switch takes seven working days and you choose the date. Barclays moves your salary, benefits, Direct Debits, standing orders and other regular payments, transfers the money in your old account on switch day, closes the old account and redirects payments sent to it for at least three years. Under the Current Account Switch Guarantee, any interest lost or charges caused by a switch going wrong are refunded.

You can cancel the account up to 14 days after opening it or receiving the account terms, whichever is later. For the offer, keep it open until the last £30 has arrived (April 2027 in Barclays' example), because each payment needs the account open on the day it is made.

The app, service and what customers complain about

On 11 October 2026 the Barclays app was rated 4.8 from 2,107,415 ratings on the App Store (version 3.76.2, released 24 September 2026) and 4.7 from about 628,000 reviews on Google Play (updated 15 September 2026, more than 10 million downloads). Barclays' Trustpilot profile scored 4.1 from 26,396 reviews, but that average hides a split: 47% one-star and 43% five-star, and it covers the whole bank, not just this account. In a Which? article on 5 October 2026, Barclays' customer satisfaction score was 76%, joint 11th out of 22.

The complaints repeat a few themes: an app redesign that removed the familiar balance view and made the layout less compact; the app logging out when you switch to another app, which breaks payment approvals that need a second bank's app; payments and cards blocked by fraud checks; support that is hard to reach; and accounts closed with little explanation. The praise goes to branch and phone staff and how easy the app is for everyday banking.

For the offer, keep evidence: screenshots of the switch completing, your salary credits and each month's ten purchases make a missing payment easier to chase.

Who should switch, and who should skip it

Consider it if you have never had a Barclays switch bonus, had no Barclays current account open on 1 October 2026, are paid at least £2,000 a month by Bacs, and are happy for Barclays to be your main account for about six months. Barclaycard, mortgage, savings and business customers can join in through the 'I'm new to Barclays' route.

Skip it if your pay is under £2,000 a month or doesn't arrive as salary, if you want to keep your old account open, if you need a joint account, if you'd mostly use the card abroad, or if you have had a Barclays switch bonus before.

If you only want a one-off bonus from a spare account, other offers ask for less. On 11 October 2026 NatWest was paying £200 for a full CASS switch, £1,250 paid in and an app login within 60 days of the switch, with no salary or card-spending condition. first direct was paying £210 for accounts opened by 2 December 2026, for a CASS switch with at least 2 Direct Debits or standing orders, £1,000 paid in, 5 card payments and a digital banking login within 45 days of opening. Each has its own exclusions: NatWest rules out anyone who has had a NatWest Group switch bonus, and first direct anyone who has held a first direct product or opened an HSBC current account since 1 January 2018. Barclays' terms don't exclude people who take those offers, but each switch needs its own current account to move. Our bank switching guide covers the rest.

FAQ

How do I get the full £300 from Barclays?
Open a sole Barclays Bank Account in the app, finishing the application within 21 days. Within 30 days of opening, request a full CASS switch with at least 3 active Direct Debits and receive £2,000 of salary: that earns £150. Then, for five months, make 10 eligible card purchases and receive £2,000 of salary in the same month for £30 each.
Does any £2,000 count, or does it have to be salary?
It has to be salary: a Bacs payment from an employer or a state or private pension, or a transfer from a UK business account to your personal account. Moving money between your own personal accounts doesn't count.
I already have a Barclaycard, mortgage or an old Barclays account. Can I still get it?
Barclaycard, mortgage, savings and business customers can: delete the Barclays app, reinstall it, choose 'I'm new to Barclays' and apply. You're excluded if you had any Barclays current account open on or before 1 October 2026, or have ever had a Barclays switch bonus.
What counts as one of the 10 card purchases?
Purchases with your Barclays debit card in shops, online or through a digital wallet. Cash withdrawals and deposits, ATM transactions, gambling, refunded or reversed payments, transfers between Barclays accounts and person-to-person payments don't count, nor do purchases still pending at the end of the month.
Do standing orders count towards the three Direct Debits?
The terms only mention Direct Debits, so don't count on standing orders. Make sure at least three active Direct Debits move with the switch.
When is the money paid?
Each payment arrives within 28 working days of meeting its conditions, marked 'Switch Reward'. In Barclays' example, someone who qualifies in October 2026 gets the £150 first, then £30 a month from December 2026 to April 2027.
Is the Barclays switch reward taxable?
Barclays says the offer isn't subject to UK income tax. It doesn't give personal tax advice, so ask HMRC or a tax adviser if your situation is unusual.
What happens if Barclays withdraws the offer?
There is no end date and Barclays can withdraw it at any time. The terms say you won't be adversely affected if you have already started your switch, met the conditions or been told you qualify.
