New to Britain: check offer eligibility before opening accounts

Start with the missing requirement
Before arrival, research the product and collect the documents the actual provider asks for. Do not enter a borrowed address, invent UK residence or guess a tax declaration to reach a welcome screen. Ask whether the provider accepts your present circumstances and document format.
Residence, nationality, immigration permission and tax residence are different questions. A UK postal address alone does not answer all of them. Product terms may also require a UK mobile number, supported smartphone, age or credit-history criteria; Chinese-language instructions do not waive those rules.
Prepare evidence; do not assume universal acceptance
| Requirement | What to ask or record |
|---|---|
| Identity and address | Which current documents and address evidence this provider accepts; names, dates and format must match its rules |
| Residence and tax | Where you actually live and the provider's tax-residence/identifier questions; seek advice if unsure |
| Contact and device | UK phone number, email, app/device support and secure ongoing access |
| Funding and payout | Accepted bank/funding route, source-of-funds checks, currency fees and how the reward can be withdrawn |
A concrete bank example: Chase is not a universal newcomer route
Chase's current-account page says 18+, UK residence only, UK tax residence, smartphone and UK mobile number, plus credit-history criteria checked by a soft search. A short local history does not establish either acceptance or rejection; the bank decides. Use these as Chase conditions, not requirements for every bank.
Its referral terms add a valid single-use invitation from someone who knows you, no application before 3 December 2025, app activation and cumulative £1,000 funding within 30 days of first account opening. The site's saved public code is not verified as unused or permitted. A successful account application does not by itself earn £50.
If mainstream current-account criteria do not fit, ask a designated provider about an appropriate basic bank account. HM Treasury describes fee-free standard operations for these accounts; individual eligibility still applies, and basic-account access does not imply a switching incentive or an overdraft.
Switching needs an account to switch
A full CASS switch moves an eligible existing current account and closes it. Someone opening their first UK account should not treat a switch welcome as a new-account bonus with no donor account. Check participation, bills and any borrowing before agreeing to the transfer.
Read the UK bank-switching guide for product and past-account exclusions. Keep opening, request, completion and funding dates. A provider can accept your account application yet decline its welcome because a campaign task or past-customer condition is unmet.
Choose the next action
- Missing a genuine address or required identity evidence? Ask the provider about accepted alternatives before applying; do not substitute someone else's details.
- No eligible existing UK current account? Prioritise day-to-day payments and access before considering full CASS.
- Considering an electronic-money account? Compare safeguarding, card and transfer fees with bank-deposit protection; a referral does not make the products equivalent.
- Considering an ISA or investment welcome? GOV.UK normally requires UK residence and age 18+ for an adult ISA, with specified overseas exceptions. Check the wrapper, allowance and provider's separate product/reward rules; investments can lose value.
- Already eligible? Use only the approved invitation route at the required stage, save terms and evidence, and budget without the uncredited reward.
FAQ
- Does this guide cover offers in Hong Kong, Taiwan or mainland China?
- No. All four languages serve people in Britain or preparing a move there. UK product and residence requirements remain the same.
- Will a passport always be enough to open an account?
- No universal document promise is made. Ask the provider about its identity, address, residence and tax checks for your situation.
- Can my first UK account earn a full CASS bonus?
- Only if you have another qualifying current account to transfer and meet the chosen campaign. Opening alone does not complete a switch.
