Three benefits, three sets of rules
A retailer discount changes the bill now. Portal cashback depends on attribution, eligible purchases, retailer confirmation and payment to the portal. A bank/card reward belongs to a separate payment scheme. Seeing all three advertised does not establish that the same order can earn them together.
TopCashback's public terms say codes obtained elsewhere often prevent cashback; even a code listed on its own site must fit the particular offer. Check product categories, new/existing-customer definitions, excluded charges, app/browser requirements and automatic discounts before starting. Do not apply one retailer's permission to another.
Illustration only: a £100 item, no delivery charge
| Assumed route | Pay now | Conditional later reward | Illustrative net cost |
|---|---|---|---|
| Direct 10% voucher; excludes portal cashback | £90 | £0 | £90 |
| Portal 8%; whole £100 assumed eligible; no voucher | £100 | £8 if confirmed and payable | £92 if paid; otherwise £100 |
| Same portal route plus hypothetical eligible 1% payment reward | £100 | £8 portal plus £1 payment if both qualify | £91 if both paid; deduct any fees |
Invented teaching rates, not provider offers. Same item and return terms; no tax/delivery exclusions, membership fee, interest or currency charge assumed. Payment reward is calculated on the £100 paid, not the £92 expected net. A larger cashback headline does not necessarily beat a direct discount.
Before clicking through
- Find the item you already need and compare final direct/portal checkout totals with matching delivery and returns.
- Read the portal's retailer terms and save the advertised rate, eligible basket, code rules and date; referral welcomes are separate tasks.
- Decide on one portal route. Follow its cookie/consent advice and avoid other affiliate links, comparison routes or extensions overwriting attribution.
- Check whether an app handoff, gift card, stored basket or coupon is permitted. Complete the eligible order in the required session and keep the full confirmation.
- Confirm the payment reward independently: accepted transaction, cap, funding/spending conditions and fees. Pay any credit bill in full; interest can erase cashback.
After checkout: preserve the evidence
Record order ID, date, eligible amount, actual payment, code, portal click and screenshots. Separate tracked/pending, confirmed and payable statuses. TopCashback's getting-started page estimates up to seven days to show pending and an average one to three months for retailer confirmation/payment; these are not universal deadlines or a promise for your order.
If nothing tracks, use the provider's official missing-claim route after its stated tracking wait and before its actual reporting cutoff. Do not wait for an estimated payout date before checking a missing order. A returned, cancelled or amended order may lose eligibility; tell the portal what actually happened.
Price the membership and withdrawal choice
TopCashback's Plus terms describe a deduction of up to £5 from annual cashback earnings under the stated rules. Compare expected incremental benefits with that cost rather than paying for a headline uplift. Standard membership and a particular welcome campaign have separate conditions.
Bank transfer, PayPal and gift-card withdrawals can have different thresholds and restrictions. A gift-card uplift is useful only if you will spend it without additional purchases; it is not interchangeable with cash. Skip the stack when the direct price is lower or the eligibility evidence is unclear.
FAQ
- Can I use any voucher with cashback?
- No. Read the chosen retailer's portal terms, including automatic codes and app promotions. A successful discount at checkout does not prove the cashback is eligible.
- Should I choose the higher percentage?
- Compare the actual basket and eligible amount after exclusions, delivery, membership and payment costs. The hypothetical example shows why an immediate voucher can beat a larger-looking combination.
- Can I count pending cashback in my budget?
- Treat it as conditional until it becomes payable and is successfully withdrawn. Track it separately from the money used to pay for the order.
